If you were to eat sugary snacks throughout the day you are keeping your insulin level high which constantly keeps your fat cells in a state of absorption and prevents the release of fat and its use as energy. Eating fat and protein does very little to raise your insulin level. So the bottom line here is, if you want your body to burn fat – meaning if you want your fat cells to break down triglycerides into fatty acids, release them into your blood stream and actually use them as energy – you need to keep your insulin level as low and absolutely avoid spikes in insulin. A note on calories: Counting calories or increasing exercise output, according to the research of Taubes and many others, is a bad way to try to lose weight because what usually happens is instead of your body burning fat to make up for the deficit in calories, it simply decreases the amount of energy it expends. So you end up lethargic and still fat. There is a lot more to this, but the science above is the rationale behind all Low GI, Low Carb and Ketogenic diets. It is why you lose weight on these diets while consuming the same number of calories. Low Carb and Low GI diets work because they cut out carbs that cause spikes in insulin, which you now know will cause fat absorption and prevent fat burn. The Ketogenic diet takes this one step further. It keeps your insulin level low which puts your body into fat- release- fat- burn mode, but also significantly increases the fat content in your diet and teaches your body to use fat as energy. Your body (your liver in particular) will enter a state of Ketosis and will break down fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which will be used as energy. During the diet you can measure how much fat your body is burning by monitoring your output of acetoacetate using Ketostix. When you enter a Ketogenic state, you will see a Ketone output of 5 to 2. L (According to “Why we get fat” by Taubes and my experience). The Ketostix I have also measure blood glucose which is useful to test for Ketoacidosis which you are not at risk for unless you are diabetic. Note that Ketostix are used by diabetics to test whether they are entering a state known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis which is very dangerous. In this case they will see very high ketone levels accompanied by blood sugar levels of greater than 2. L. You should be seeing blood sugar levels of zero (according to your Ketostix) during your diet. Please note that the diet outlined below is not the “Cyclical Ketogenic Diet” used by bodybuilders. It is a basic Ketogenic diet which I’ve found to be the most effective fat burning diet available. I’ve modified this diet from the classic Ketogenic diet used to treat epilepsy which recommends a 4 to 1 ratio of protein to fat. I’ve found that I can reach a state of Ketosis with a 1 to 1 ratio of fat to protein provided I keep the carbs very low. Without further ado, the basic Ketogenic diet: What you’ll need. The Diet. Note, you can eat as much of the foods below as you like, but I’ve found that I quickly feel full eating this diet. Don’t overeat and more importantly, don’t under- eat and make sure you’re getting the calories you need to function. This is NOT about cutting calories, it’s about releasing fat reserves and teaching your body to burn them. Drink lots of water during the diet (but don’t go crazy). I find this helps increase my metal clarity and energy. Taubes and others recommend not starting an exercise program at the beginning of this diet because during the acclimatization period you will not have enough energy and it usually results in people quitting the diet. During the diet, measure your rate of fat burn by measuring your acetoacetate output with your Ketostix. Do this every time you visit the loo. You should see 5 to 2. L, and I’ve noticed it’s particularly high after a very fatty meal. Blood glucose (if your ketostix show this on a separate color tab) should be zero at all times. If it is not zero and above 2. L you may want to consult your doctor. One of the most effective tricks during a diet is routine. Eat the same meals over and over or plan your meals ahead for the whole week. I’ve found it effective to pre- make dishes on Sunday and have them ready for the week. That makes it incredibly easy to stick to the diet because I avoid thinking which means I avoid creativity and creativity requires decision making which leads to hard choices. Just avoid the hard choices and have it all planned and some of it ready to grab and go. The Leafy Green Salad recipe: This is a recipe for a basic very low carb salad with lots of flavor. It’s great to add to any high- protein, high- fat meal. Spinach, lettuce and/or mustard greens. Red peppers. Tomatoes. Optional raw onions. Optional green beans raw. Balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing with salt and pepper. Use lemon and lime very sparingly if you add it. The vinegar actually reduces the glycemic index of this salad (and other foods). Below I have outlined three days with a total of 9 meals that you can mix and match as you like. At the end I include a list of Ketogenic- safe ingredients you can add or subtract as you like. Sausage containing no carbs or sugar. Bacon. Lunch: Chicken with as much skin and oily gooey bits as possible. Steamed spinach or broccoli. Supper: Steak with cheese. Leafy green salad. Before bed 1 glass of wine with a slice of cheese. Day 2. Breakfast: 2 egg omlette with friend mushrooms, cheese and chopped parsley. Lunch: A whole duck breast if you can get it or chicken again with as much fatty skin as possible. Leafy green salad. Supper: Hamburger made with high fat mince without the bun. The mince can contain the usual paprika, chopped onions and garlic if you like, but absolutely no syrup or sugar. Add Cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and any other leafy low- carb greens you like. ![]() My Experience. I switched to an autoimmune protocol diet after being diagnosed with Hashimotos in hopes of giving my immune system a little time to recover. I was hopeful that it would be beneficial, but I was AMAZED at how quickly it helped. Within the first week, I saw my bloating go away, my thyroid nodule felt noticeably smaller, I had more energy (after the first couple of days), and my skin improved. Over the course of the almost two months I did the strict protocol, I lost some of my stubborn weight and felt incredibly better. It also helped me identify foods that I was not responding well to, but that I didn’t realize were problematic (like eggs, which was confirmed by blood test later). I was able to reintroduce many of the foods after that time without a problem and I felt continually better (until I created a flare by not sleeping and stressing about finishing my book). Sleep and stress are both huge factors in overall health and are especially important for those with any kind of health condition. The Specifics of the Autoimmune Diet. The general idea of the autoimmune diet is that you are removing any potentially inflammatory foods, but the specifics are a bit more difficult. Some sources consider foods like fruit and sweet potatoes ok, while others do not. It can seem overwhelming, but this way of eating is actually relatively simple if you follow a template. My typical day on the autoimmune diet was: Breakfast– A scramble of meat and cooked vegetables, a cup of homemade bone broth, some fermented vegetables, and supplements. Lunch– A huge salad with leftover protein (meat, offal or fish) and a small piece of fruit, a cup of bone broth, fermented water kefir or kombucha and olives. Dinner– A stir fry with some type of protein (meat, offal, seafood) with a lot of vegetables and allowed spices, evening supplements and at least 1 cup of healthy starch like cooked winter squash, pumpkin, etc. I also made a lot of stuffed squashes and soups. We rely heavily on big salads, stir frys and casseroles while on the autoimmune diet. When I first started, it seemed like I couldn’t eat anything and I was depriving myself of everything, but it is important to remember that many times the body is deficient in certain nutrients because of an autoimmune disease so during the course of the 3. I focused on extensively nourishing my body with as many high quality proteins, vegetables and healthy fats as I could consume. I may have been tired of my food choices at times, but I certainly never went hungry. I also focused on consuming a TON of vegetables during this time, after talking to Dr. Terry Wahls and reading her book, The Wahls Protocol. Wahls emphasizes the importance of consuming at least 9 cups of vegetables a day, especially brightly colored vegetables, leafy greens, and onions and garlic. Other Factors. Diet is hugely important for all aspects of health, and for me, it became even more important after being diagnosed with autoimmune disease, but it is by no means the only factor. Personally, I found that these factors were equally important to recovery for me: Sleep. I love to stay up late and skimp on sleep so I can get more done. My body does not love this. I’ve found that when I sleep at least 8- 8. I see my health markers improve (blood tests, fasting blood glucose, etc). Stress reduction. Also a tough one for me, but stress can have as much of an impact as diet on gut health and hormone levels. I found that even with a good diet, I started to notice symptoms creeping back in while under the stress of finishing my book. Supplements. I hesitated to include this part because if diet, stress and sleep aren’t under control, this won’t help at all, but I found certain supplements helped tremendously once I had optimized other factors. I personally take: WP- Throid thyroid medication (under the care of my doctor), Betaine HCL with protein meals, 5- MTHF and Methyl- B1. Folate, Probiotics, Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Cortisol support, Omega- 3s, Vitamin D (and sunshine daily in the morning), Magnesium, L- glutamine, Gelatin, and Vitamin C. I would highly recommend seeing a good functional medicine doctor and finding out what you personally need before taking any supplements. Autoimmune Diet Encouragement. This diet is difficult. Sometimes the best things in life require some work and denial of self. An elimination diet is temporary and it gives you a window into your own body and what you need to eat for optimal health. Don’t let is cause you extra stress. Don’t let this keep you up at night. Try to focus on nourishing and loving your body and providing it with the building blocks it needs to function optimally. I hate being the bearer of bad news, so today I want to tell you how to heal your leaky gut. What’s a leaky gut you ask? Great question! What is a Leaky Gut? The term “leaky gut” is the name used for a highly permeable gut lining. Our digestive tracts are meant to serve as a protective barrier between our blood stream and the food we eat. When the digestive tract is functioning properly it allows fully digested fats, proteins and carbohydrates into our blood stream to be used by the body. When the digestive tract becomes worn down by factors such as; frequent antibiotic use, chronic stress, environmental toxins, processed food, or infection due to fungi, bacteria or parasites—the gut lining gets tired and weak. Factors that Contribute to a Leaky Gut. Frequent antibiotic use (learn how to restore gut health after antibiotics) Chronic stress Environmental toxins Processed foods Parasites Bacterial infections Fungal overgrowth (candida, yeast)What Happens When the Gut Gets TIRED? When the gut lining gets weak, it starts allowing larger, undigested food particles into the blood stream. Over time the immune system gets confused about the undigested food particles floating around and starts launching immune responses against certain foods. If left unchecked, additional immune responses happen to a greater number of foods and eventually autoimmune disease develops. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? But wait, there’s hope! You can heal a leaky gut with time and a gut healing protocol. ![]() Here are 1. 0 ways to heal a leaky gut. Ways to Heal a Leaky Gut*Chew Food Completely. This very simple act has an enormous impact on our digestion. We start digesting food in the mouth so the more work your teeth do, the less work the stomach and intestines have to do down below. For a child with a compromised digestive tract, chewing food completely helps enormously. If your child has a hard time chewing well, consider blending foods when possible during the healing phase. Eliminate Offending Foods. A leaky gut is characterized by perforations in the intestinal wall that allow molecules or microorganisms to pass through into the bloodstream. I know, I know—my previous post said elimination diets will not cure food allergies (or a leaky gut) and while they don’t cure them alone; elimination diets are the cornerstone of a healing protocol. Because removing offending foods during the healing phase reduces overall inflammation. The body can’t heal if it’s constantly inflamed and reacting to food. Digestive Enzymes. Food allergies and sensitivities often arise because of inadequate digestive enzymes. The body simply does not produce the enzymes needed to fully break down food. To encourage better digestion, gentle digestive enzymes can be taken with each meal. Pre and Pro- biotics. I know I sound like a broken record, but a healthy digestive tract requires a balance of good bacteria in the gut. Eating fermented food and drink, or taking a probiotic supplement will help to recolonize healthy bacteria and restore digestive function. Seal the Digestive Tract. To repair leaky gut damage the digestive tract needs to be “sealed” to decrease intestinal permeability.

You can do this by increasing the consumption of gelatinous foods like homemade bone broth and adding grass fed gelatin products like this to smoothies. Also try this type of gelatin to make my homemade fruit snacks, however, I suggest waiting until later in the healing protocol for the type of gelatin that gels as it can be harder to digest. Before embarking on a gut healing protocol, make sure to check for underlying an parasite, fungus, or infection first. De- stress Stress actually decreases the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. When a person is under stress (whether due to a stressful environment or a stressed mind), the body automatically turns on the sympathetic nervous system and kicks into “survival mode” by increasing heart rate, blood pressure and respiration. Leaky Gut Syndrome Isn’t Only Scary, But Extremely Dangerous to Your Health – This is More Than a Poop Issue!At the same time, the body shuts down all biological systems not needed for immediate survival, including digestion and the body’s healing mechanisms. Simply put, our state of mind directly affects both our digestion and our ability to heal so learning to manage stress is very important to healing. When healing from a leaky gut and leaky gut syndrome, it’s important to have the proper functional blood tests done first to establish your own personal baseline.
